Walk Through Home Energy Losses Before Buying Gadgets

Start with the bill and the lived experience

Collect a year of energy use when available and mark moves, vacancies, unusual weather, equipment changes, or rate changes. Then ask where the home feels too hot, cold, humid, dry, noisy, or drafty. A high bill without context cannot identify whether the main cause is the building, equipment, behavior, tariff, or weather.

Observe the envelope safely

Walk around doors, windows, attic access points, service penetrations, and visible ducts. Look for damaged seals, direct sun, missing shade, condensation, and obvious gaps without entering unsafe spaces. A smoke pencil or infrared camera can add information, but each has limits and should not be used near flame or hazardous materials.

Check schedules and simultaneous loads

Heating or cooling may run against open windows, electric water heating may overlap peak pricing, or devices may remain on without a purpose. Record time, setting, and occupancy before changing anything. Comfort, indoor air quality, and safety take priority over a small theoretical saving.

Rank measures by evidence and reversibility

Begin with clear, low-risk corrections such as adjusting a schedule, replacing an approved filter, using existing shades, or sealing a confirmed minor gap with a suitable product. Get quotes and projected savings in writing for larger work. Ask what assumptions drive the estimate and how results will be verified.

Diagnosis should come before the purchase

Use bills, comfort patterns, room observations, and equipment schedules to identify a testable problem. Only then compare products or services.
